This project is partially supported by a CityArts Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events. Notably, Julia’s married name, Julia Petta, appears nowhere on the monument. When the coffin is unearthed, she appears just as fresh and full of life as she did on her wedding day. The mother begs her son to dig her up because she’s calling to her from beyond the grave. She married too young and her mother felt she was buried alive. A desparate woman presses an employee of the Hull House on the Devil Baby and where they are hiding it. A photo of Petta in her wedding dress was placed on her monument, which also features a statue of her based on this photo. Following her death, Petta was buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in the Chicago, Illinois suburb of Hillside. The girl was born in Palermo, Italy but, in August of 1913, Julia and her mother, came to American where they moved in with her brother, Henry (Enrique), who had come over in 1909. In 1892 Filomena Buccola gave birth to a girl to whom she gave the name Julia.
